We tend to think of being spontaneous as freedom. After all, who wants to live a rigid, over-planned life?
But here’s the twist: a lack of structure might actually be what’s making you feel overwhelmed.
In reality, predictability creates freedom—not the other way around.
The Hidden Drain: Decision Fatigue
Have you ever walked into your kitchen, noticed a pile of papers, and felt completely stuck—like your brain just refused to engage?
Or it hits 4:30 p.m. and you have no idea what to make for dinner?
That’s not laziness. That’s decision fatigue.
Every choice you make throughout the day—big or small— uses up mental energy. By the time you actually need to make an important decision, you’re already running on empty.
Think Like the CEO of Your Home
If you run a household, you are essentially its CEO.
And your most valuable resource isn’t time—it’s focus. You have to conserve it.
Just like a CEO protects their energy for high-level decisions, you need to protect yours. That means cutting down on unnecessary choices.
Introducing “Decision Tokens”
Imagine you start each day with a limited number of “decision tokens.”
Every decision—what to clean, what to cook, what to wear, what to do next—spends one of those tokens.
By mid-afternoon, you might find yourself running low…or completely out!
That’s when overwhelm kicks in.
Where Are Your Tokens Going?
A simple way to regain control is to notice where your decisions are being wasted:
- What Should I Clean?
- Use a daily cleaning routine so you don’t have to decide. That’s why I created my 6/10 List. The top portion are the Daily 6 tasks.
- What’s for dinner?
- Decide earlier in the day (or plan ahead for the week).
- What am I doing today?
- Check you calendar instead of figuring it out on the fly.
The goal isn’t to make better decisions—it’s to make fewer decisions.
Check Your Energy Throughout the Day
Pause in the afternoon and ask yourself:
“How many tokens do I have left?”
- 50+ tokens: You still have energy. Tackle a small project, like a 20-minute decluttering session.
- Under 10 tokens: You’re in survival mode. Stick to the essentials.
This small check-in helps you work with your energy instead of against it.
Prevention Is the Real Solution
You’ve probably heard of the phrase:
“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
That applies perfectly here.
You don’t fix decision fatigue by pushing through it—you prevent it by reducing the number of decisions you need to make in the first place.
A stress-free home doesn’t come from constantly making better choices.
It comes from needing to make fewer choices at all.
When You’re Out of Tokens
Some days, you’ll hit your limit.
When that happens, give yourself grace and permission to declare decision bankruptcy.
You’re done making decisions for the day—and that’s ok.
A good CEO doesn’t burn out trying to do everything. They work smarter, not harder. They protect their energy.
The Bottom Line
If you’re ending every day mentally exhausted, it’s not a personal failure—it’s a systems problem. Something needs to change.
Reduce decisions. Add structure. Protect your focus.
That’s how you create a calmer, more manageable home—and a clearer mind to go with it.
I have a deep dive video on this topic over on my YouTube so be sure to check that out! https://youtu.be/GdKeL15g-pM?si=o5rmzWtq50W-wrJ0
If you feel like you’re running out of decision tokens every day, take a closer look at where they’re going. A few small changes can make a big difference. I’ve attached a “decision token audit” to help you keep track of where your tokens are going.
