Overwhelmed? Where Do You Start?
In order to understand what you need to do, you need to understand how and why you are doing these things! It’s not that you’re lazy. It’s not that you’re “bad at cleaning”. You just haven’t been properly taught the order and process of managing a home.
Every House Has Two Modes
- Maintenance Mode
- Tidying
- Cleaning
- Transformation Mode
- Decluttering
- Organizing

In each mode, the order matters! You cannot clean before you’ve tidied and you cannot organize before you’ve decluttered.
Maintenance mode is exactly what it sounds like. It’s about maintaining your house on a daily basis. The goal is to keep the house from falling into chaos.
Transformation mode is about transforming your home. The goal here is to remove excess and set up systems.
Both Are Important!
If you only do maintenance mode, you’ll always be moving the same piles of junk around. If you only do transformation mode, the messes will continue to grow and you’ll never achieve calm. It sounds like a lot, but I promise it’s easier than you think.
Do You Feel Behind?
It’s important to remember you have to manage today’s mess before you tackle yesterday’s. So you’ll need some shortcuts to follow.
Here are 3 shortcuts I want you to enact today:
- The Daily 6. This is the top part of my cleaning schedule, the 6/10 list. These are 6 non-negotiable daily tasks that keep your house functioning. It takes me less than 30 minutes to complete. If you do nothing else, do these!
- My Basket Method. Have baskets sitting around in your home. Throughout the day, before you leave the house, before you go to bed toss everything sitting out into the baskets. Put it all away on the weekend or when you have time. If your kids want to play with toys or they’re looking for something, have them check the baskets.
- Simplify. You have too much stuff. Period. Give everyone in the house 7 outfits. That’s it. For the next month, that’s what they wear. Keep dinners easy. Nothing messy or complicated until you get your home under control.
Tidy Tasks Vs. Cleaning Tasks
Now you might be thinking, “these are all tidy tasks”. And you’re right! For your cleaning tasks, take a look at my Weekly 10. It’s right below the Daily 6 on my 6/10 list. Do these 10 things throughout your week, whenever you have time. I typically try to fit them in on Saturday mornings. That’s it. It’s really that simple!

Do the things I’ve mentioned for one month and you will finally achieve a manageable home!
