In my early 20s I had no clue what I was doing in life. I spent so much time cleaning my house. I scrubbed, dusted, and wiped everything before and after work, and it was exhausting. The worst part? My house still looked messy!
Now, in the second half of my 30s, I rarely clean, yet my house has never looked better.
What changed? I learned the difference between a clean house and a tidy one.
Tidying vs. Cleaning
In your home there are two modes: maintenance mode and transformation mode.
- Maintenance mode is exactly like it sounds — maintaining your space (tidying and cleaning).
- Transformation mode is transforming your space.
Tidying and cleaning both fall under the maintenance mode, but they are very different. Tidying removes visual clutter. Cleaning removes dirt, grime, and bacteria. Both matter, but tidying makes the biggest difference in how your home feels.
Think about it: your kids probably won’t notice fingerprints on the windows, but they’ll notice the piles of papers on the counters, dishes in the sink, and laundry covering the couch.
When visual clutter is everywhere, it’s harder to feel calm and focused in your home.
Don’t get me wrong. A clean house is great! But we often focus so much on cleaning that we forget to tidy first.

Cleaning Is Hard
Tidying is easier than cleaning, and it gives you something you can actually see and feel right away.
If you’re constantly working on your house but never feel like you’re getting ahead, you might be spending too much time cleaning and not enough time tidying.
Start by putting things away and clearing the clutter. You might be surprised by how much better your home feels without spending hours scrubbing it.
