Feeling Overwhelmed at Home? Do These Four Things First

When your home feels out of control, the worst thing you can do is try to fix everything at once.

I get asked all the time, “How do I declutter, meal plan, start a cleaning routine, and get organized when I’m already so far behind?”

The answer is simple: you don’t.

Not yet.

Before. you can build routines, systems, or organization, you need one thing first — a stable home.

Once your home is stable, then you can implement all the things you want.

So here are the four things you’re going to start doing today to get stable fast.

1. Switch Into Survival Mode

This is not the season for perfection. This is the season for simplicity.

For now:

  • No dishes — use paper plates.
  • Minimal laundry — wear clothes, toss them in the wash at night, pull them from the dryer the next morning, and put them right back on.

This reduces decision-making, chores, and overwhelm so you can focus on stabilizing your home instead of drowning in daily tasks.

2. Simplify Meal Planning

You are not running a restaurant.

You do not need a seven-day menu with themed dinners and Pinterest-worthy meals.

Pick three easy meals your family likes and rotate them.

For example:

  • Tacos
  • Spaghetti
  • Frozen pizza

That’s it.

Your family will survive eating spaghetti three times a week while you get your house back under control.

3. Remove All Visual Clutter

Visual clutter makes your home feel chaotic even when it’s not dirty.

But you’re not going to organize right now — you don’t have the bandwidth for that.

Instead:

  • Grab a large tote
  • Sweep everything off your surfaces into it
  • Set the tote aside

You will deal with the contents later, after your home is stable.

Right now, your only job is to clear surfaces so your home instantly feels calmer and more manageable.

4. Do the Daily Six

These are the six tasks I do every single day that keep my home manageable.

They take less than 30 minutes, and they work even when life is chaotic.

The Stabilization Formula

Do all four of these today:

  1. Survival mode
  2. Simple meal rotation
  3. Clear visual clutter
  4. Daily Six

If you commit to these, your home will stabilize quickly — faster than you think.

Once you’re stable, then you can declutter, organize, build routines, and create the home you want.
